In a heartfelt effort to bring family closer together, this project involved expanding a family home by adding a thoughtfully designed Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The homeowners envisioned a space where their grandparents could live comfortably while maintaining a close connection with the rest of the family.
The ADU was seamlessly integrated into the existing structure, extending the home’s footprint off one end. Careful attention was given to ensure that the building lines flowed naturally, making the addition appear as though it has always been a part of the house. This dynamic, multi-generational living space enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
The ADU is a fully self-sufficient residence, featuring a well-appointed primary suite, a cozy guest bedroom, and ample additional storage and office space in the basement. The wraparound deck offers a tranquil outdoor area for relaxation and family gatherings, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor living.
One aspect of this project was the homeowner’s desire for an interior connection between the two residences. This was achieved by sharing a wall in the basement, allowing for easy access between the main home and the ADU while preserving the independence of both spaces.
The upstairs living area is designed with high ceilings that create an airy, expansive feel, making the space feel much larger than its actual square footage. This thoughtful design choice balances grandeur with intimacy, ensuring the ADU remains an ideal small living space that is both beautiful and functional.
This project showcases the possibilities of multi-generational living, where family members can stay close while enjoying their own private and personalized living spaces. The ADU addition not only adds value to the home but also enriches the family’s lifestyle by fostering togetherness across generations.
